Commuter Chic with Tod’s

By: Ashleigh K. Copeland

Such an iconic brand as Tod’s needs not worry about constantly reinventing the wheel; unlike some other Italian brands showing in Milan this October. The classic Gommini driver for both men and women is perhaps the most iconic symbol of Tod’s and one most shoe addicts either own or at least know about. The best kind of grab-and-go, quality, versatile shoe anyone should have in their closet.

As far as driver’s go, Tod’s didn’t invent this style of shoe, but they are for sure the staple piece most associate with the brand season after season. Usually made of leather in various solid colors, the Gommini was brought back in suede for the brand’s Spring 2019 collection. This season, Tod’s showed men’s and women’s on the same ultra-cohesive runway. The collection plays up the idea of neutrals you need to have for next spring, that will carry you through the beginning of a warm fall 2019.

See my favorite looks from Tod’s spring 2019 below.

Another notable aspect of Tod’s are the handbags. Along with the Gommini driver, this Italian brand is also known for its quality leathers and craftsmanship. Just about every look is accompanied by a fashion forward top handle bag or tote bag. The perfect go-to gift going into the holiday season, for your beau or bella.

Why Women Need to Wear Valentino

By: Ashleigh K. Copeland

Stunning is the first word dripping off my tongue watching the Valentino spring 2019 collection.  The beautiful drama running down the runway in mixed prints, bold black and white, neutrals, and of course signature Valentino red.  However short this presentation, it seems like it lasted for an hour, in a good way of course.  This collection is a story told by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli.  The story could be about any number of things, depending on your point of view.  For me, this collection is the story of women in 2018.

MAXI DRESSES_FINAL 02-02.png

Black draped garments start off the story making a bold statement about being comfortable with wearing glamour, and choosing not to hide or shrink away.  Feathers trail behind on the runway, falling from embellished sandals.  Millinery is on the rise here, with avant-garde feathered hats creating an orbital pull, further engaging the audience.  Street style is a heavy influence here, seen in the oversized gold hoop earrings, amongst other accessories.

Part two of our story injects neutrals beyond the black hemisphere.  Khaki and white brighten up the sea of black garments.  Pops of Valentino red sprinkled throughout the middle of the collection on pleated maxi skirts and couture level dresses.  For me this collection is about layers.  Peeling back the mourning and heavy cloaking that some women choose to hide behind, especially during such a tumultuous year as 2018.

The last part of the collection still shows intriguing hues of plums and browns.  Spring 2019 is to be about standing out and being confident in who you are.  As the finale approaches, glittering, contrasting prints in mint, bubblegum pink, rich plum, and burnt orange breakthrough.  Like every show there will be pieces that never make it to mass market, or even make it past the red carpet, but there are so many looks here that any woman would look good wearing.

The finale brings chills to my spine as each model took their final walk down the runway.  A collective wave of comfort, security, and ease seems to be felt by the audience for creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s spring collection.

Dream in Color by Prada

By: Ashleigh K. Copeland

Over the years, Miuccia Prada has turned out some memorable fashion shows for the brand in her namesake.  Prada continues to outdo herself by leaping to new creative heights every season.  Each collection has an inspiration made real by the scenery, music, and ambiance of her runway shows.  Prada asks you to dream bigger, look into the future, and expand your ideas about what fashion is supposed to be.  For 11 minutes, the audience is brought into the mind of Miuccia Prada and her team.  It is apparent how detail-oriented the Prada team is when it comes to the brand’s footwear & accessories collections.

For Prada’s spring 2019 collection the shining lights of the entire show are the accessories.  Each model is adorned with a futuristic, 1960s inspired head piece.  Some are studded to look like crowns, others are finished with a colorful satin.  Either way, every women walking on the runway looks like they are rocking a crown.

Legwear is another huge take way in the accessories division.  Every look is accompanied by opaque knee highs with the signature, triangular, Prada logo showcased on the side of the calf.  These school girl style knee highs won’t be considered a fall-only staple going into 2019.

Along with legwear comes footwear.  The always innovative mind of Prada does not disappoint this season.  Platform oxfords that are reminiscent of Nike Air Max 270s, at least the extreme fashion version of them.  Slingback, negative heel, Mary Jane pumps, with peep-toe and Prada logo accents, in colors to match the bags.  Last but not least, new age loafers and flat sandals made in multi-colored knitted fabrics.

Of course, who can live without fawning over the fantastic handbags almost every model carried on the crook of her arm.  Luxurious leathers in red, stark white, creamy ivory, black, baby doll pink, saddle tan, and even tie-dye.  As usual, Prada will be dictating the eyewear trends for next year as well.  Back to oversized, flamboyant, pieces of art used to protect your eyes from those UV rays.
